I was fortunate to be able to celebrate my friend’s birthday with happy hour at Bernini last month. Philly is one of my friends which I have been fortunate to meet through my involvement with Yelp Elite in Tampa. Like me, Philly is also a foodie and loves to explore new restaurants and cuisines throughout the city. Since we were celebrating her birthday, she selected the restaurant for us to try and Bernini was her choice.
Bernini is located on 7th Avenue in Ybor City in the historic Bank of Ybor City building. The cuisine is described as innovative Italian and includes a variety of menu items including pizza, pasta and Italian inspired entrees. Fortunately happy hour at Bernini’s occurs daily from 4-7 pm. Happy hour includes ½ off pasta and entrees, as well as $2 Finalandia Martinis.
The menu is very appealing and it was quite challenging to decide what I wanted to eat. So while we figured it out we started with drinks. Of course we tried the $2 Finalndia Martinis. There are thirteen to choose from. I had the Raspberry Martni and Philly had the Apple Martini.
Although they looked good upon delivery, neither were very tasty. In fact the Raspberry Martini tasted like cough syrup. In my opinion they are cheap for a reason, so proceed with caution if you choose to see for yourself. It is possible that we just did not choose the right flavors, so please let me know if you find a flavor you like.
A complimentary bread basket was provided as we waited for our entrees. The bread was not warm but that flavored butter was very delicious. Honestly had it not been for the butter we probably would not have eaten the bread. We had a small bit of butter left after eating our loaf of bread and I was trying to come up with other ways to use it because it was so good.
Making a decision on our entrees was difficult because there were so many interesting menu items from which to choose. Among the ones we considered were the Veal Chop, the Pistachio Crusted Grouper and the Pork Osso Buco We ultimately decided on the Crispy Duck and the Shrimp Orecchiette.
These were items both of us were considering ordering so I am fortunate that Philly is a food sharer because she was willing to split both entrees with me. This was perfect because we were both able to enjoy two entrees while enjoying happy hour at Bernini’s. Since the entrees were half price it was like getting two for the price of one which is perfect for this frugal girl.
We were actually full after eating all of that food so we did not order dessert. I was hoping that the restaurant would recognize my friends birthday with a small cupcake or something but they didn’t. So if you are looking for a restaurant which makes a big deal out of birthdays, this is not the place for you.
Overall the service and food was good. I am interested to return and try some of the other menu items featured at a discount during happy hour at Bernini on another occasion.
The early bird dinner at Bernini’s is great for my fellow frugal foodies who are in the mood for a real meal. As you can see the entrees were a normal portion size despite being only half the price.
Early bird dining is another great way to save a few pennies when dining out. Often your discounted meal can be paired with happy hour drink specials as well.
